Purity Ball

I am reading and thoroughly enjoying Bringing Up Girls by Dr. James Dobson. In Chapter 11 Cinderella at the Ball, he discusses a Purity Ball. This is totally foreign to me as I have never heard of it. Randy Wilson is the founder of the concept of the Purity Ball. “The Father Daughter Purity Ball is a memorable ceremony for fathers to sign commitments to be responsible men of integrity in all areas of purity. The commitment also includes their vow to protect their daughters in their choices for purity. The daughters silently commit to live pure lives before God through the symbol of laying down a white rose at the cross. Because we cherish our daughters as regal princesses – for 1 Peter 3:4 says they are “precious in the sight of God” – we want to treat them as royalty.”

At a Purity Ball, a young lady can have her father, grandfather, uncle, step-father, neighbor or any other man in her life who will commit to taking on the responsibility of helping her stay pure. Participants partake in dancing with their escorts. The males read a covenant over their daughters. “I choose before God to cover my daughter as her authority and protection in the areas of purity. I will be pure in my own life as a man, husband, and father. I will be a man of integrity and accountability as I lead, guide, and pray over my daughter and family as the high priest of the home. And this covering will be used by God to influence generations to come.” The fathers sign the covenant and the daughters sign it as witnesses. The fathers present swords at the cross to show the determination to protect their daughters. Then both daughters and fathers kneel, and the girls lay a white rose under the cross symbolizing their commitment to stay pure before God. Microphones are setup so that fathers can bless their daughters and daughters can bless their fathers.

This night, is a way to reestablish the father-daughter relationship. He discussed how a woman in her forties who had a broken relationship with her father asked him to escort her. Her father asked for her forgiveness and they have since reestablished a relationship as daughter and father. This to me is so beautiful and it must be so powerful to witness. It really is never too late to have a broken relationship healed.

I do not know any girl/woman who would not desire their fathers to make them feel special, loved, cherished, and worthy. This event gives men an opportunity to achieve that. If fathers treat their girls as young ladies / princesses, then the girls have a better chance of growing up acting like young ladies. They might be apt to make decisions in their future to protect their purity.
